Statistic Analysis

In times of economic pressure, people stop spending money on luxuries. Magazines are luxuries, and in the end of 2013 magazines lost print sales by an average of 6.3 per cent (according to press gazette).

The website also shows statistics for individual magazines and while a lot of magazines have dropped, some have increased. Doctor Who has increased by 25.8% which could be because there was a new series and a new doctor, so the interest in it was sparked again. However, Doctor Who Adventures magazine went down by 10.9%. Doctor Who Adventures is aimed at children and a younger audience, which could mean Doctor Who doesn’t appeal to younger people now. It could also show young people aren’t fanatical about Doctor Who in the way older people are so the audience has changed, or it could mean even the younger audiences are reading the other magazine as it appeals to them more.

FHM has also decreased quite a significant amount (-15.9). Nuts magazine has decreased even more (-33.5%). The decrease in readership in this genre of magazine could show men have grown out of this and have become interested in other things. It could also show that the rise in adult content online has affected the sales in adult magazines.
