Media Terminology


·        Masthead: Title of the magazine


·        Rag out: A quote of an article from a previous edition shown separately to the rest of the article


·        By line: Line that says who the article is by


·        Splash: Front page


·        Cover lines: Short sentences on the front page giving hints at articles inside


·        Subheadings: Used to focus the reader and give more information on the article after the headline


·        Sell lines: An introductory headline after the headline


·        Pug: A ‘sticker’ on the magazine that states the price, a promotion or a freebie that you can get inside the magazine


·        Skyline: A thin strip at the top of the page that may contain extra stories or freebies


·        Caption: A small sentence explaining a picture


·        Headline: The title of an article


·        Puff: A short sentence that attracts readers attention


·        Headshot: A picture of someone’s head


·        Bullets: Big circle shaped ‘stickers’


·        Main Image: The biggest image on the front cover that goes with the big story


·        WOB Headline: ‘White on black’


·        Secondary Image: A smaller image than the main image that goes with a smaller story
