Double Page Layout

Modular Layout: very square using straight edges / accurate use of margins etc
Drop Cap: first capital letter is much bigger than the rest of the text
White Space: can be used to allow the picture to breathe, or make the page look busy
Free Layout: things go anywhere and no obvious layout was used

When creating a double page spread consider:

  • basic layout (grid)
  • column width and positioning
  • font and type size
  • use of space
  • colours
  • use of image
  • page numbers
  • brandings
  • captions
  • how image and text are intergrated
  • text to image ratios
  • image to image ratios

  • This is an example of a double page spread in the popular mainstream magazine 'Q'. This modular layout is becoming increasingly popualr and the red 'L' looks artistic and different and links back to the red 'Q' that is the magazines logo. The picture is very well taken and looks very effective and professional, which reflects well on the magazine. The image takes up a whole page and is therefore big enough to attract the reader and there is white space so the image can breathe. When I am making my magazine, if I choose a modular layout, I will make sure there is equal white space either side of the text so it looks tidy and will maybe use justified text so the page doesn't look messy.
