Problems with Photoshoot

I have taken some pictures of my friends now that I could potentially use on my magazine. While taking and uploading these pictures I thought they were good however when I came to edit them I realised some problems. It would be much easier to edit pictures if they have a plain background and no mess, as I can easily use instant alpha then tidy it up manually. I also think I need to create a more relaxed and comfortable environment as the models seem awkward and the smiles forced. I can have more input as to what the models wear and what their hair and make up is styled like and direct them as to what to do, which is the main reason I chose to conduct a photoshoot rather than have live action shots. I would also like to get some impromptu shots as I believe they would look good on the double page spread or contents page.
