After conducting my market research I have made several decisions about my magazine and I have changed some of my ideas.
I asked people who I planned on targeting my magazine at as much as possible, however the online survey was aimed at pop music lovers in general and therefore may not reflect my age and gender preferences. One person who filled in my questionnaire was 15 or over, which again makes them just out of my target audience so some of those answers may also be irrelevant.
I asked how they would like the main story to be written and half of the people I asked said a question and answer style interview. This is therefore what I will do, especially seeing as this fits with the conventions of a pop magazine. The second most popular answer (a quarter) said a story style interview, and I may open with this as a lot of magazines choose to do this as an introduction to the interview. I also asked what the target market prefer to read about, the music or the artist themselves. It was very close, but there were slightly more people who said the artist. This is something I will take on board as I can style the interview so that personal questions are also asked, however as the result was so close I will definitely talk about music too.
Regarding other articles within the magazine, people said they like to read horoscopes and real life stories, and this took up half of the results. After this, it was music reviews and problem pages. This shows that the target market I am aiming for does not buy music magazines for simply music but also for the gossip side, which is something I will have to consider when filling my contents page. I also asked a similar question on my online survey, and on this interviews came out first, then music reviews and 'a day in the life' stories'. This is something to consider, as my main story will definitely be an interview and then I will have to include other stories on my front page.
I then asked about the name of the magazine, and the majority said 'Glitz' was the best name. I have decided that this will be the name of my magazine as it is girly and clearly appealing to my target audience, as well as being different to other music magazine. Online, Glitz also won so this is definitely the most appealing name.
I also asked whether they already brought pop music magazines and which ones they brought. The majority of people I asked already brought them, either weekly or every two weeks. This shows that they are something which is wanted regularly and not on a monthly basis and it shows the market is already very full. Online, it was 50/50 whether people brought them or not but again this may not be my target market, but those who brought them brought Top of the Pops. A few people brought two regularly, which shows that they need to offer different things and people may even buy more than one.
I asked what people look for in a magazine when they are buying them so I know what I must include in mine. The majority of people said interesting articles and popular celebrities. This is something that I will take on board and include different types of articles and feature as many as possible on my front cover to attract different people. Interestingly, free gifts and posters was the most popular answer online which again I will include and try and advertise on the front cover.
For an idea of how much my magazine will cost, I asked how much people would pay and for both online and in person questionnaires people said £3.50, so this will be the price written on the front cover.
Online I asked what type of main image people prefer on the front cover, and the most popular answer was dressed up. This is the style I am planning on doing due to the name Glitz and the target audience response.
